HARBOR SPRINGS – Mike Coriasso of White Lake, Brad Bastion of Shelby Township and Steve Nichols of East Lansing each shot 2-under 70 Wednesday on the Heather Course to lead through one round of the 37th GAM Mid-Amateur Championship presented by OmniKinetics at Boyne Highlands Resort.

Boyne Highlands is hosting the championship for Michigan male amateur golfers over age 25 for the 18th consecutive year and 22nd time in the history of the event.

The field of 155 golfers is split to take on the Heather and Moor courses for the 36-holes and two days of stroke play competition, and an overall Mid-Am winner and winners in three other age categories will be determined (Mid-Amateur age 25-and-over, Mid-Seniors 45-and-over, Seniors 55-and-over and Super Seniors 65-and-over).

Wind and rain offered up tough playing conditions on both courses Wednesday, and the weather forecast for Thursday’s final round has tournament officials changing to a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start  instead of tee times for the field on both courses. The Mid-Amateur and Mid-Seniors will play the Moor course in the final round, and the Seniors and Super Seniors move to the Heather.

Bastion, last year’s second-place finisher, Coriasso and Nichols had a one-shot lead on Nathan Clark of DeWitt, who opened with a 71.

Ron Jona of Birmingham, who shot 72 on the Moor, was the leader through the first round among the Senior golfers. Chris Chocola of Harbor Springs and Greg Zeller of Jackson were next at 73. In Super Senior play, Ian Harris of Bloomfield Hills shot 75 to lead.
